November 2009 Interview: Lilian Thuram

Introduction

Lilian Thuram is a retired professional soccer player and 1998 FIFA World Cup Champion. With 142 caps, he is the most capped player in the history of the French national football team. During the 2005 French riots, Thuram became a champion for France’s disenfranchised youth when he spoke out against racist remarks made by French president Nicolas Sarkozy. He continues his legacy as an activist as a writer and through his foundation for education against racism. I caught up with Lilian last week while he was in residency at Duke University with Professor Laurent Dubois, our interview translator. Blackademics, welcome Lilian Thuram.
