May 2008 Interview: Doug E. Fresh

Introduction

Doug E. Fresh is a Hip-Hop icon - he’s a rapper, producer and the originator of the 5th element of Hip-Hop: the beat box. His career skyrocketed in the early 1980s highlighted by appearances on Beat Street and through recordings with the Get Fresh Crew, Slick Rick, MC Hammer and Lil Vicious. Today, Fresh has worked with everybody from Nas and Luracris to Prince. I met Doug yesterday when he came to LA to work with the Monk Institute’s Bebop to Hip-Hop program, where he rocked a show with Herbie Hancock and Charli Tuna (of the Jurassic 5). This interview was at the airport after the performance.
