December 2007 Interview: Mari Evans

Introduction

Mari Evans is a preeminent poet and scholar with dozens of published poetry collections, articles, essays, children books and plays. A former professor at Cornell, Spelman, Purdue and St. Louis, Evans has been honored with her face on a Ugandan stamp and with a Grammy nomination. A staunch opponent of the Prison Industrial Complex, Mari Evans has been a passionate political activist for over half a century. I interviewed Evans at the Martin Luther King Jr. Arts complex in Columbus, Ohio while she was being honored at the legends and legacies conference alongside, Nikki Giovanni, Odetta, Ruby Dee, Sonya Sanchez and Val Gray Ward.
