December 2008 Interview: Raphael Saadiq

Introduction

Raphael Saadiq is a legendary singer, songwriter and producer. He began his career as the lead vocalist and bassplayer in the classic R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! Saadiq launched his solo career on the Higher Learning soundtrack with the release of one of my favorite R&B songs, “Ask of You” in 1995. His most recent solo project, “The Way I See It” is up for 3 Grammy Awards this year. I was introduced to Raphael two days ago, by fellow blackademic and visual artist Julie Pitts. She was designing a T-shirt for Saadiq featuring legendary bass player, James Jamerson. That’s where we start the interview.
