What’s Really Hood in Zimbabwe?

images.jpgPlease allow me to put you on, to the situation in Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe, the president of Zimbabwe, is a brutal dictator. According to the Wall Street Journal, Mugabe launched an attack on the poor people of Zimbabwe, displacing over 700,000 with bulldozers and soldiers. This was a pre-emptive strike against the citizens of Zimbabwe, whom Mugabe considered to be a political threat. He called it,

Operation Murambatsvina, literally ‘operation clear the filth’-the filth being hundreds of thousands of Zimbabwean man, women and children… (The Wall Street Journal)

Under Mugabe, Operation Murambatsvina has disrupted HIV/AIDS treatment efforts, life expectancy has decreased to only 35 years and critics of the government live under constant fear of abduction and torture. No wonder Zimbabweans are flocking by the millions to South Africa. There are some brave souls such as Arnold Tsunga, the executive director of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, who are on the ground in struggling in Zimbabwe. Activists such a Tsunga deserve our recognition and support. Listen to an interview with him here.

As for what we can do to uplift this situation-we can write letters, lean on our politicians and raise awareness. I’m open to other suggestions.

UPDATE (11/7/06): Just a disclaimer, really. This blog was written “under the influence” of Western Media.
