Ignorance in the Academy pt. 2: equal playing fields
The recent post, Ignorance in the Academy brought up some very interesting questions about education and equality in the 21st Century. Here are some quotes to give you an idea of the varying perspectives,
“History hasn’t determined our current conditions in our (Black) communities- our choices have”
This is a very popular notion, backed by such Black political figures as Ward Connerly and Alan Keys. Last week, while I was being interviewed about Blackademics on WAOK, (a talk radio station in Atlanta) a professor called in with a similar sentiment,
“We need to stop blaming the government and White people for our conditions and take responsibility for our actions and poor decision making”
Here is a counter-argument from the comment section of the previous post,
“To believe that a black child who goes into a school system has the same chances as a white child is utterly incorrect and would be denying the facts of racism that iexist on all levels in our society.”
Is there equality? Do black people need to stop complaining? Are we just using excuses as a crutch? or is there still inequality? can or should we blame? and either way, how do we move forward?
