Slackademics

Well, no one’s posted all week–I’m busy trying to prep for my upcoming move to Seattle, so I have an excuse. To follow up on Pierce’s post about the $15 kicks, here’s an NYT piece on the advent of “black style” in the high-fashion world and black designers’ place in its pecking order. Digressing a bit from that topic, I find the black obsession with “looking fly” pretty counterproductive, especially among those that can least afford to shine sartorially. Actually, it’s more than that–the idea that we as a people can easily be fleeced with artfully constructed fabric and shiny baubles is downright embarrassing. This is a mindset we need to figure out how to get away from; the sooner, the better. Like Dead Prez said: “”Would you rather have a Lexus or justice, a dream or some substance, a beemer, a necklace or freedom?”
