I Don’t like them A-Rabs
We’ve all seen the headlines in the wake of this recent terrorist scare, I first heard the news the other day. I was working on music in Southern Pines, North Carolina with one of my boys- a producer. He brought up the attempted terrorist attack because he had to board a plane to Miami the following day. He explained that he didn’t want to fly because he was afraid that the A-rabs (pronounced Aey-Raabs) would try to blow his plane up. An understandable (not really though) concern regarding the recent scare.. but what does it expose? To what extent do we condone the ignorance of our peers? Just as I was about to explain that he was probably more secure because of attempted attack, his sister chimed in, stating “I don’t like them A-Rabs.” She explained that there were three A-Rabs on her plane during a recent trip to California, and seven A-Rabs on the way back. She was frightened by them. This is not an isolated incident. Since 9/11, I have heard dozens of brothers and sisters– peers going on about the “Islamic threat.” Have we been brainwashed by mainstream media? Every time I try to explain that the Islamic community has recently been suffering from a similar level of racial profiling that has plagued the black man in this country for centuries, more people surprise me with their ignorance. Are we so eager to jump on the bandwagon of branding America’s next black (or brown) sheep?
